Beckham, England's most famous footballer,
only came second in the 2001 World Footballer of the Year contest
- beaten by Real Madrid's Luis Figo - but he has won another prize instead.
"Becks" - who is married to Victoria Adams (better known as Spice Girl "Posh Spice" ) was named Sports Personality of the Year for 2001, by the BBC in Britain. It was a big satisfaction for the Manchester Unitedmid-fielder, just a few months before the 2002 World Cup competition. Beckham is particularly popular because he has helped to give new life to the England football team. For several years, the English national football team had been in a poor state. For a long time, many people in England feared that the national team would not have a place in this year's World Cup Finals, in Japan and Korea. But just in time, Beckham saved the day, making sure that England will be among the teams present. Beckham, who will captain the England side in Japan and Korea, won British sport's best prize after a final public vote during a special two-hour TV programme in December. More than 750,000 people voted on the night, joining many others who had voted earlier, to chose one of six shortlisted sportsmen and women. Beckham, who is 26, was born in Leytonstone,
in Essex, just north east of London. As a schoolboy, his footballing talents
were quickly recognised. As a teenager he represented the county
of Essex, and also attended Tottenham
Hotspur's school of excellence.
Later this year, as football mania breaks
out all over the world, Beckham will probably be one of the
stars of the show, during the 2002 World Cup finals; but he will
not have an easy job!
